LCT-Based Framework for the Assessment of Sustainability: From the Perspective of Literature Review

AbstractIn the context of sustainable development, urban transformation should encourage the use of life cycle thinking tools for infrastructure development. By adopting sustainable economic, social, and environmental criteria, this study presents a review of sustainability assessment tools to build a framework for urban infrastructure. It incorporates a variety of methods that economists and industrial ecologists use for evaluating their projects, in addition to the LCT approach. To recognize the strategic sustainability indicators and criteria, the framework uses LCC, LCA, and SLCA in conjunction with stakeholder evaluation and multi-criteria decision analysis, which recognizes the foremost three pillars of sustainability, i.e., economy, environment, and society. Additionally, system dynamics and agent-based modelling are used to optimise the framework. The prominence of the framework is to understand the route an urban infrastructure development should follow to achieve key sustainability interests involving the interconnected environmental and socio-economic aspects. This sustainability assessment framework can be utilised by consultants or supporting agencies to help organisations carry out and monitor such projects.

Exploring the technology changes of new energy vehicles in China: Evolution and trends

In the sustainable development context, the automotive industry is shifting towards new energy vehicles (NEVs) to reduce carbon emissions. China leads in NEVs production and technology but faces challenges in innovation capacity due to increasing market competition and technological demands. Consequently, to explore the situation of technology innovation of China’s NEVs, this paper delves into the technology changes in this field with the invention granted patents from 2000 to 2021, employing the basic patent-metrics method and Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) topic model for evolution analysis and vector autoregression (VAR) model for trend predictions. The research findings indicate that: (1) the patents pertaining to NEVs have experienced an average annual growth rate of 23%, with notable regional disparities in the spatial distribution of said patents. (2) Among the 8 key technology topics identified, battery equipment technology, brake control system technology, and supplying system technology emerge as the top three technology topics. (3) As NEVs progressively become more intelligent, there is an anticipated surge in interest regarding vehicle braking control technology over the ensuing five years.

People–Place Narratives as Knowledge Typologies for Social Sustainability: Cases from Urban Contexts in the Global South

In the dynamic interplay between people and their physical environments, the Global South stands as a mosaic undergoing a multitude of transformative influences in architecture and urbanism, within which examining social sustainability becomes imperative. While the prevailing attention remains on environmental and economic sustainability, this study addresses a persistent gap in the urban literature by focusing on the dynamic and manifold nature of social sustainability. Positioning itself within the context of sustainable development, the study links the pursuit of social aspects of sustainability with selected unique urban contexts from the Global South. Five cases, including Alexandria (Egypt), Tripoli (Libya), Basra (Iraq), Lilongwe (Malawi), and Accra (Ghana), are discussed through multi-layered investigations which involve attitude surveys, interviews, focus groups, participatory systematic observations, and behavioral mapping, engaging directly with inhabitants and stakeholders. Uncovering people–place narratives in the identified contexts, the cases are developed into five knowledge typologies that serve as practical tools for planning and design decision-making, policy formulation, and academic discourse. Discussions are conceived to demonstrate the transformative role people–place narratives play in fostering a more sustainable and equitable urban future. Conclusions are drawn to offer practical insights for stakeholders involved in various capacities in shaping the urban landscape of the Global South.

Towards Sustainability

The Horizon 2030 program of the United Nations presents a proposal for sustainable development and 17 goals for transforming our world [1]. Various actions and public policies are now striving to attain these objectives, with (bio)analytical chemistry, due to its nature, playing a fundamental role not only in industry but also in education and research [2]. Nowadays, within this concept, the appeal of a methodology continues to be sensitive, precise and accurate in terms of analytical chemistry but the analytical characteristics are also targeted towards the principles of environmental sustainability. Thus, in the literature, it is common to find that methods where the three Hs were used (i.e. High sample/reagent volumes, High risks and Hard work) are now being substituted by methods involving the three Rs (i.e. Reduce, Reuse and Recycle). It is easy to rationalize that the multitude of applications in different research areas (e.g. chemistry, human health, biology, environment, etc.) tend towards minimalist concepts that may involve all analytical sequences. Additionally, to attain the ‘greenness’ metrics of a method, different greenness assessment tools are available in the literature, such as GAPI or AGREE,[2], and metrology and chemometrics may help to attain this objective. Within the context of sustainable development, this volume of the BrJAC is prone to a diversity of applications towards sustainability that involve methods employing small volumes, low-cost sensors, minimalist techniques and the importance of teaching metrology, among others. It is time to enjoy the reading of this issue and take into consideration the important aspects for the next application of our research work, which may involve environmental protection, circular economy and resource sustainability, the so-called sustainability triad (Environment, Economy and Society). Charting sustainable logistics on the 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road: a DEA-based approach enhanced by risk considerations through prospect theory

This study investigates the sustainable logistics potential of countries along the Maritime Silk Road (MSR), an essential element of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), against a backdrop of increasing global emphasis on sustainability and efficient trade practices. Addressing the gap in existing literature, it explores how strategic positioning influences countries’ logistics capabilities, integrating risk considerations and behavioral decision-making aspects into the assessment. Through a specialized Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) model that incorporates Prospect Theory, this research provides a nuanced evaluation of economic performance, energy efficiency, infrastructure robustness, governance quality, and innovation capabilities. The analysis reveals significant findings, such as Vietnam’s outstanding economic efficiency, Indonesia’s notable achievements in sustainability and governance, and Malaysia’s balanced efficiency, which collectively enhance the MSR’s logistics framework. Additionally, India, Greece, Djibouti, and Kenya emerge as vital partners due to their diverse strengths. The introduction of a risk-aware DEA model, enriched with behavioral factors, marks a significant advancement in logistics assessment methodologies, offering a more comprehensive understanding of sustainable logistics practices along the MSR. The implications of this study are profound, providing valuable insights for policymakers, investors, and business leaders. It guides strategic decision-making, promoting sustainability in MSR trade activities while aligning with global eco-conscious practices and economic growth within the context of environmental stewardship and sustainable development. However, the research acknowledges limitations related to the indirect measurement of decision-makers’ psychological behavioral coefficients and the focus on efficiency metrics without extensive exploration of cultural, political, or legal factors. This work sets a new precedent in sustainable logistics research, encouraging future studies to incorporate direct behavioral data and qualitative factors for a more enriched evaluation. Its innovative approach not only contributes to the academic discourse on sustainable logistics but also offers practical tools for enhancing the MSR’s trade efficiency and sustainability.

Advancing sustainable development through planetary health – A holistic approach to global health: A systematic review

In global health, three holistic and multidisciplinary approaches are typically mentioned: One Health, Ecohealth, and Planetary Health. The most recent concept, Planetary Health, has been spontaneously developed and promoted as a new science since 2015, with the establishment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This coincidence marks a new era of interconnection between Global Health and Sustainable Development. However, this connection has rarely been examined, and a full-scale study covering the essential elements of Planetary Health is lacking. In this study, we aim to (a) provide an insightful understanding of the current research on Planetary Health, (b) address the interconnectedness between Planetary Health and SDGs and sustainability,s and (c) explore the determinants of Planetary Health in Sustainable Development context. The findings from diverse articles have revealed an increase in research interest among scholars in Planetary Health and Sustainable Development. However, regarding new contributions, most research deals with the topic in general terms rather than developing an analytical framework of concepts. Among the three pillars of sustainability, linkages have been strongly established between the economic and social impacts on Planetary Health while the environmental dimension has been slightly neglected. In terms of detailed SDG linkage, connections with SDG3 and SDG9 were found in all articles, whereas the linkages with SDG7 and SDG14 were absent. The determinants of Planetary Health in the context of sustainable development have also been explored in which climate change and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are the biggest contributors to the promotion of planetary health.

New insights on social finance research in the sustainable development context

AbstractResearch on sustainable finance has experienced significant growth in recent years, but the exploration from a comprehensive perspective is still in its nascent stages. As of July 2023, our research revealed that this area remains relatively underexplored in the existing body of knowledge, leading to a notable lack of comprehensive research analyzing the current state‐of‐the‐art in the social finance arena. To address this gap, our study takes a pioneering approach by utilizing scientometrics and network analysis techniques, specifically employing VOSviewer and Bibliometrix in conjunction with Web of Science and Scopus databases. By merging data from both sources and removing duplicate entries, we established a consolidated database of 401 relevant studies. Through our analysis, we have identified prominent authors, sources, and the most influential studies in the social finance arena. Additionally, we examined the coupling of studies and authors to ascertain their significance in this emerging domain. The results have unveiled several prominent further research, including mainly social banking, Islamic finance, social innovation, the impact of the COVID‐19 pandemic, impact investing, social impact bonds, and Sustainable Development Goals. By shedding light on the current landscape, our findings comprehensively understand the field's progress and potential directions. This insight is valuable for market participants, researchers, policymakers, and decision‐makers seeking to navigate and contribute to the evolving landscape of sustainable finance with a social focus. Furthermore, our innovative use of scientometrics and network analysis sets a precedent for future research exploring the complex interplay between finance, development, and sustainability.

AI-driven critical parameter optimization of sustainable self-compacting geopolymer concrete

This study aims to optimize the critical parameters of self-compacting geopolymer concrete (SCGC) with a primary focus on enhancing compressive strength. Optimization of SCGC holds significant importance within the context of sustainable development. To implement the research, a comprehensive database was meticulously compiled by integrating data from published literature, with Fly ash and GGBFS serving as essential binders. Prior to the development of a robust machine learning model, the database underwent careful preprocessing to ensure data quality. In pursuit of optimal performance, three machine learning model's (base model) hyperparameters were diligently fine-tuned employing effective spotted hyena metaheuristic optimization technique. A hybrid model was developed using three base models and a meta-learner. The hybrid model outperformed other models owing to better accuracy and generalizability. Leveraging quasi-Monte Carlo sensitivity analysis, this study effectively identified temperature, Na2SiO3/NaOH, NaOH molarity, and percentage of superplasticizer as critical parameters with the highest impact on compressive strength. Optimization involved adjusting the temperature (25–90 °C), Na2SiO3/NaOH concentration (8–16 M), molarity (1.5–4), and superplasticizer amount (2–10%). The optimization of these crucial parameters was effectively executed using Response Surface Methodology (RSM). This study introduces a novel integrated approach within RSM, deviating from conventional quadratic or polynomial models for interaction characterization. The optimized parameters were consistent across cases involving fly ash, GGBFS, and a blend of both binders, except for temperature, which varied based on the binder type. The optimized mix parameters are used for experimental validation of results obtained through AI-driven analysis and observed to provide an expected result of compressive strength in the range of 39–43 MPa.

Utilizing synoptic scale climate data within sustainable tourism development

Tourism has great potential to be used as a tool towards achieving sustainable development. The appropriate implementation of sustainable tourism methods helps to establish local economic viability in concert with attentive treatment of both social and environmental systems. Maintaining such environmental and social integrity within a location is often the basis by which tourism demand is generated—drawing tourists from across the world. In this paper, we specifically address the use of climate information within Nepal where tourism in the Himalayas is driven by the human-nature interface and the unique culture which has developed in this alpine environment. In doing so, we highlight how focusing on a synoptic scale climatological analysis can provide valuable information within a sustainable tourism development context. Literature has established that tourists operate in ‘realms’ of climatic comfort that might be readily described through synoptic-scale atmospheric phenomena using descriptors such as ‘humid cool’ and ‘warm humid’ conditions. Variables of the Gridded Weather Typing Classification (GWTC-2) are used to describe local climate and climate change. Analyzing weather and climate data within a tourist-centric synoptic-scale context provides a new perspective to more fully understand sustainable development within the weather, climate, and tourism nexus.

Purpose: The main objective of this paper is to analyze the factors that influence the performance of Village-owned Enterprises and village development performance in Lombok Utara Regency and Analyze the role of social capital polong renten in moderating the influence of manager competence on the performance of Village-owned Enterprisesin Lombok Utara Regency.   Theoretical Framework: Explains the context of sustainable development as development that is oriented towards meeting human needs through the wise. Competency is the ability to carry or carry out a job or task that is based on skills and knowledge and is supported by the work attitude required by the job. Village-owned Enterprises is an institution established by the village government to improve the village economy. social capital is a resource inherent in social relationships. Individuals involved in social relationships can use these social resources for personal and group interests.   Design/Methodology/Approach: The study is quantitative associative and this research was conducted in 43 villages in Lombok Utara Regency. With the number of samples used as many as 215 people in 43 Village-owned Enterprises. Data analysis used the SEM-PLS method.   Findings: The results of the study found the role of the government, management competence, utilization of information and communication technology, and social capital of Polong Renten have a significant positive effect both in installment and indirectly on the performance of Village-owned Enterprisesand the performance of village development.   Research, Practical & Social Implications: Polong renten's social capital significantly moderated the influence of the manager competency variable on the performance of Village-owned Enterprisesin Lombok Utara Regency. novelty in research obtained results and illustrated there is a factor of polong renten social capital, which has an influence and moderation of influence between variables that impact the performance of Village-owned Enterprisesand village development performance.   Originality/Value: In addition, it further emphasizes the moderation effect of social capital in other forms, whether it can strengthen or weaken the influence relationship between variables estimated to affect the performance of Village-owned Enterprisesand village development performance.

Prosumers and sustainable development: An international assessment in the field of renewable energy

The term "prosumers" coined by Toffler, relates to those customers who also engage in the co-creation of products, which they only partly consume, and whose balance is made available to a broader group. But even though the role of prosumers is increasingly relevant as a more comprehensive number of people are engaging in the production of products to be shared by others, there is a need for studies that aim at identifying how widespread they are, and the concrete contribution they are providing to some key area such as, for energy, energy generation and distribution. Based on the need to address this research gap, this paper reports on a study on prosumer behaviour in a sustainable development (SD) context, with a focus on the energy sector. The paper deploys a mixed-methods approach which entails a bibliometric analysis of prosumers from a sustainability perspective - to gain a better understanding of the topic -, a quantitative study of prosumers’ behaviour in the field of renewable energy involving respondents from 44 countries, and a set of case studies, supported by the literature, which illustrates current trends. The novelty of this paper resides in the fact that it explores the role of prosumers in an SD context across many countries in the critical area of energy generation and use, outlining the drivers of positive behaviour and identifying some further information needs.

Energy consumption‐economic growth nexus: How does sectorial differentials affects sustainable development?

AbstractEnergy, being one of the significant drivers of growth, has gained much focus in the last four decades. A connection between energy and growth exists in the economy: on the one hand, energy is a vital factor of production while growth improves living standards, which increases energy consumption on the other hand. Previous studies on the energy‐growth nexus paid less attention to sectorial differentials in the consumption of energy and growth. Also, the literature could not relate that to sustainable development. Thus, this study explores the sectorial differentials in energy consumption and how they affect the energy‐growth nexus within the context of sustainable development. The research employed secondary data for 46 sub‐Saharan Africa (SSA) countries for the period 2007 to 2020. Using the General Methods of Moments estimation technique, we found that all the measures of energy consumption positively affect economic growth. Also, CO2 intensity is positively related to growth in the economy while CO2 emissions from solid fuels negatively affect economic growth. Again, Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) is positively impacting economic growth and Gross Domestic Product (SSA) per energy use. Policy implications are discussed in the paper.

The discussion begins by defining the concept of sustainable development and its relevance to urban areas, emphasizing the necessity for cities to adopt sustainable practices to address the challenges posed by rapid urbanization and environmental degradation. The article then shifts focus to the digital economy, explaining how it acts as a catalyst for innovation and efficiency in various sectors, including transportation, energy, waste management, and public services. Furthermore, the article explores the indicators of effectiveness for sustainable development in the context of digital transformation, proposing a framework for evaluating the progress of cities towards sustainability goals. The objective of this research is to investigate and assess innovative approaches to managing Zakat within the context of sustainable development and societal well-being in Indonesia. Given the multifaceted challenges confronting Indonesian society, Zakat holds tremendous potential as a tool for fostering sustainable development and enhancing social welfare. This research employs a literature review to examine pioneering practices in Zakat management within Indonesia. Information gathered from diverse sources, including research papers, scholarly publications, and case studies, will be utilized to analyze various successful models of Zakat management implemented in the country. The findings of this study aim to shed light on effective innovations in Zakat management that contribute to achieving sustainable development and augmenting social welfare in Indonesia. Moreover, the research will identify critical factors that facilitate the successful implementation of innovative Zakat management strategies, while also evaluating the resulting social and economic ramifications. It is anticipated that the outcomes of this study will furnish pertinent policy recommendations for the government, Zakat management institutions, and the general populace, aimed at enhancing the efficacy of Zakat management for sustainable development and the advancement of social welfare in Indonesia. Furthermore, this research endeavor seeks to foster a deeper comprehension of Zakat’s potential as a substantial funding source to fortify key sectors in propelling inclusive economic growth and fostering social equity within Indonesia.

Navigating energy and climate justice in Southeast Asia: perspectives and pathways

This research explores the multi-faceted challenges and opportunities of achieving climate and energy justice in Southeast Asia, particularly in ASEAN. By examining three distinct yet interrelated studies, it provides a comprehensive account of energy access development that intertwines regional electrification strategies, localised energy solutions in the Philippines, and an in-depth analysis of just transitions in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Vietnam. The research presented here delves into the complex dynamics of electrification efforts, showcasing the role of diverse stakeholders, the importance of contextually grounded business models, and the implications of socio-political factors on climate justice, energy justice, energy access and sustainability. Emphasis here is on the need for an integrative approach to energy policy that considers not only technological innovation but also the social, economic, and cultural dimensions of sustainable development. The findings presented herein offer significant insights into the pursuit of equitable and sustainable energy access in Southeast Asia, highlighting the region’s unique challenges and opportunities in the global context of climate change and sustainable development.

Aim of the study: The study on strategies and challenges of sustainable development policy in India investigates the multifaceted aspects of sustainable development within the country. It aims to understand the various strategies employed and the obstacles faced in pursuing a sustainable development agenda Design/Methodology: The study embodied a literature reviews as well as a descriptive investigation to achieve its objectives. It comprehensively analyses the effectiveness and obstacles of sustainable development policies in India. The methodology for locating, selecting, going over and summarizing significant literature and research studies for the review is described in the report. Fundamental Backgrounds on the Impact of Green Credit on Sustainable Economy

The research aims to investigate the theoretical background concerning the influence of green credit on sustainable economy in emerging countries such as Vietnam. Using the desk research methodology, the content focuses on researching the overview of the concept and the causes of the development of green finance in general, green credit in particular, the context of sustainable economic development in each country, each continent, and find out the significance of green credit in achieving sustainable goals in economic development.

Methodological Support of Social and Natural-Resource Evaluation of Inclusive Tourist Objects in the Sustainable Development Context

"This research aims to form a scientifically grounded and usable methodological support of social and natural-resource evaluation of inclusive tourist objects for the effective formation of a sustainable inclusive tourism space. The author’s understanding of the social and natural-resource evaluation of inclusive tourist objects as a set of ecological, economic, social, inclusive, and rehabilitation approaches is suggested, which allows monitoring the natural-resource potential taking into account individual characteristics, the accessibility of the tourist object and its rehabilitation opportunities for people with disabilities of various nosologies. The research is based on an attempt to take into account subjective and objective conditions in the aesthetic landscape valuation. The results obtained during their interaction will make it possible to take into account the peculiarities of the landscape that affects a person, as well as the specifics of perception and the degree of susceptibility of a person. Compliance with the recommendations for social and natural-resource evaluation will make the socio-cultural space unhindered for all categories of the population, which will provide access to social services for each person for their integration, socialization, and adaptation. Methodological principles of quantitative evaluation of accessibility parameters and attractiveness factors of natural resources and tourist infrastructure objects for participants on the implementation of an inclusive rehabilitation and social tourism programme have been developed, which will provide access to social services for every person and promote their integration, socialization, and adaptation."

Objective: This article primarily discusses the current status and trends of research on household energy in China within the context of sustainable development. The academic community in China considers addressing the consumption structure of household energy as one of the essential means to drive domestic sustainable development.   Methods: Utilizing the literature visualization analysis software, Citespace, we conducted a quantitative visual map of the research field of household energy in China and analyzed the evolutionary path of research in this domain.   Results: The study reveals a scarcity of literature and insufficient research outcomes in the field of Chinese household energy. Clusters of keywords such as rural households, rural energy, energy poverty, and household consumption indicate a research bias towards rural and impoverished areas. Keyword emergence analysis over a one-year time slice identified 10 keywords, suggesting a lack of diversity in the research field of Chinese household energy.   Conclusion: The continuous improvement of research related to household energy has driven the transformation and upgrading of China's household energy consumption structure. The use of research findings enriches theoretical aspects and innovative practical methods related to Chinese household energy consumption, promoting the continuous development of research related to household energy. Throughout different stages of household energy research, it is observed that the intermediary effects of smart grids and low-carbon awareness drive the reform of China's household energy consumption system and practical applications, such as promoting reductions in carbon emissions. However, there is currently a lack of micro-level research on household energy within the Chinese academic community.
